Shock, Horror! Government Ministers speed!

September 22nd, 2008

The Irish Mail on Sunday are “reporting” that Government Ministers and their cars have been cought excesivly speeding… and this is during a week when a load of new “state of the art” Gatso vans where bought…. great. government loosing money, not enough in the exchecker, and they go and blow a lot of money on some new Transit vans….

In all fairness, who really cares that a government minister and their garda driver is doing 200k in a 100k zone? same reason most people dont complain when the garda pass you on a motorway doing 100k in a 60k work area… they are trained to do these speeds, and so are the cars! they are not honda Civics or Fiat Puntos. they are high end Mercs and and Audis.

Ireland has a stupid reputation for going after speeders… People speed. big deal. and yes, people die in road crashes… i agree, speeding can be bad if you hit a tractor or Fiat Punto comming around a blind bend while your doing 160kph… but, lack of speed can also kill… you finding a fiat punto doing 40k on a motorway while your doing the 120kph speed limit can really ruin your day too….
did you know, 6 people a year die from licking 9 volt batteries…. wonder when the health and saftey loonies will start to stick stupid stickers on those…

VRT

January 26th, 2008

Its been a while since i have complained about anything on this site, but this week has put me over the top.

About 2 weeks ago, i was sitting in my Mobile Office, reading the online car sites, and i came accross a very nice car. i wasent thinking of changing the car, but at that moment, i made the decision: i was going to buy it if it was still available. Next day i took it for a test drive, and the day after, put quite a large deposit on it. Tuesday (the 4 day) i bought it. That was it! it was mine. Only issue: it had UK registration plates.

Now the insurance company had no problem insuring me on UK plates, even though i am in Ireland. i said it would be temporary, and they said grand. So, my next task was VRT, and this is where my gripe comes in.

When you buy a new car in Ireland, or import one from another country (unless you have owned it for 6 months in that other country and can prove it) you have to pay VRT, or Vehicle Registration Tax. this, up till July of 2008, costs anywhere from 22.5% for a car under 1.4l, 25% up to 1.9l and 30% for cars over 1.9l. This changes in June or July (not sure) and i will talk about that in a minuite.

Since the Car i bought was a 2.5l BMW, i have to pay the 30% bracket. That works out at EUR1900, give or take, and guess what i get for that? Nothing! they give me a price of paper, with a reg number, and I HAVE TO BUY MY OWN BLODDY PLATES! 1900 quid, and you think they would throw in a set of plates! No! First years road tax (which, by the way is 822 for my car, and goes to about 899 on the first of Feburary) is not included, and the car is due for an NCT in a couple of weeks, because it is over 3 years old and has not been tested here yet, which is also not included.

1900 quid. I get sweet fuck all. What the hell am i paying for? the use of Roads? Well, what about that extra lane at the side of the road with the sign “Bus Lane”? my road tax is paying for that, so why am i not able to use it? and if i do, i get fined even more? Motorways? then why all the Toll booths?

Bus lanes can be used by Buses (obvously), Taxies (dont get me started), Bikes (which dont pay tax) and motor bikes (which dont use it since they dont need to). 90% of the buses in the bus lane (if not more) pay very little road tax (the last time i checked, a CIE bus pays about 160 quid a year on road tax), bikes pay none, and taxies are just bastards anyway. and then you have bikes. they pay nothing! absolutly nothing, so why should they get use of that peice of road?

I work hard, i pay taxes. I have to pay VRT on new cars, Road Tax every year, Tax on Petrol, and tolls on some roads, and yet i am the one who gets fined for driving in a bus lane? and these people who dont have cars, dont pay road tax, get to use it for nothing? Come on! what am i paying for?

in relation to the tax increeses for VRT and Road tax, the VRT system is now based on emmisions, which means my 2.5l car would cost 36% VRT. and road tax goes up 9.5% for cars under 2500cc and 11% for cars over. who exactly though it was a good idea to get the greens in to power anyway, especially as an environmental minister.

Are borders and the like hiding ISBN numbers?

October 21st, 2007

I was in Boarders in Blanchardstown today, and was browsing though the computer books section, as is my want on a lazy Saturday afternoon. I wanted to take note of  ISBN numbers of books for 2 valid reasons: 1 I had no cache on me to get the books now, and 2 to check online for cheaper prices. I know the second one is probably rude, but in all fairness to myself, this is Ireland, and everything seems to have 3 taxes on them: 1 vat, 2 Dublin prices and 3 just a tax to get extra money out of you. But I noticed that the ISBN numbers of the books are all hidden by the boarders price tag. You have to get it from the inside of the book. Now, people who know what they are doing will be able to find it relatively easily, but is this an any ISBN finding measure, or am I being suspicious?

Speed Bumps and Bus Lanes

August 9th, 2007

Right, so I am a motorist, an avid driver, and a self proclaimed Petrol head. I like driving, and for me driving is a fun experience. But, what the hell is the reason for Bus Lanes and Speed Bumps!

First, a rant on Speed Bumps. They (some idiot in the county council) decided it was a good idea to put speed bumps around my area. All down the main road and in the estate I live in (and surrounding estates, just in case you think I’m special). Anyway, we got a warning about these, but where told they where something completely different. They said they were putting in “Bus Pillows” which are kind of half speed bumps. If you position your car correctly (and your car is big enough) your wheels will miss the bump its self, which is nice, since you don’t have to slow down too much.

Now, just let me clarify: you can’t speed with the Bus Pillows. If you’re off by an inch or 2, or your car is too small, you get hit but the bump and it’s painful for both the passengers, and more importantly the car. Needless to say, we didn’t get Bus Pillows. We got proper pain in the arse, full on back jolting, front spoiler crunching speed bumps, and I am not happy! This is painful for both the car and my passengers. The speed limit on the road is 50KM (30MPH) and there is no way you can do this speed any more. So, couple of points in relation to this:

1.       The flow of traffic has slowed dramatically, which now causes tail backs and traffic Jams. There are 4 schools on this road and if it’s raining and they let out, all hell breaks loose and no one is going anywhere fast.

2.       Am I going to get compensated for my front spoiler, which is fairly low (this is standard BMW front spoiler, not some Honda Civic body kit job) and now fairly destroyed because of these fecking things?

3.       What about my passengers well being? My mother’s back is not exactly in the best condition. It’s quite sore most of the time, and this is causing much pain for her, even when crawling over the speed bumps at 2MPH.

A friend had a good idea: a cement mixer and quite a lot of cement. Fill in the gaps between all the bumps, and just have one continuous speed bump. Interesting theory, but since the road is about 2 K  long, by 3M wide, by about 20cm of “bump” (give or take) we may need quite a lot of concrete… 120 Square KM (if my math’s are correct…. Which they probably aren’t).

Anyway, this brings me on to my next rant: Bus Lanes. As I said, I’m a motorist. I pay road tax, tax on petrol for the car, tax on the insurance for the car, and when you buy a car, you pay a Tax called VRT (which is 25% of the car if it is under 1.9l and 30% of the car if it’s over 1.9l). So, that’s a lot of Tax. And all this Tax is to go on the road network, to ease the suffering of drivers (reduce congestion, etc). So, the road to the Dundrum Shopping Center has been widened, which you would this would be to allow 2x the amount of traffic to flow though. That would be the intelligent thing to do, right?

Right, but this is the County Council and the Government. They never do anything intelligent. Ever! So, it’s now a 24 hour Bus Lane. One either way. Thing is, we don’t have 24 hour buses, but we do have a 4 hour traffic jam around Dublin, twice a day, and sometimes longer. So, instead of having a bus lane, which is mostly empty, give us our bloody road back! Seriously, why am I paying for roads, which I am not, allowed use?! I get penalty points for driving in one, and a fine, which, god only knows where that money will go to. And all this because I have a car.

So, people who can’t afford a car, or who can’t drive, or who don’t want to drive, and most importantly, don’t actually pay road tax, have a dedicated lane, just for them, so they can get to work or go shopping or drinking, or whatever, quicker then I can, but I am paying for it. Why?!

Speed kills

July 20th, 2007

Right, to start with, your probably thinking whats with all the angryness around cars? Well, i do a lot of driving around Dublin and Ireland in general, and, it has been said that you don’t have to be mad to drive in Dublin, but it helps. You get angry with a lot of people while driving around Dublin; Taxi drivers, Bus drivers, Bus lanes, speed cameras, speed bumps, and generally anything that gets in your way or slows you down.

So, on to the speed part of things. This idea of “Speed Kills”. It doesnt. Think about it. In a crash, the actual thing that kills is usually the sudden deceleration, the object that either hit you or you hut, and the car your traveling in breaking up and causing harm. Look at F1. Robert Kubitza crashed his F1 car doing 180Mph, and survived. Richard Hammond crashed at 288Mph and survived, with injuries to his brain, but is back to being himself.

Back to my point. Speed does not kill. its loosing control of your car at speed that causes problems. its like the idea of falling off a building will kill you. Well, it wont. its the sudden stop at the end, which we can blame gravity for, which actually kills you.
